After a while, I finally got a stupid cheap deal on one of my favorites from my childhood. It's one of those games we'll remember 'till the day we die, fellas!

Love them. Had all of them except for the PS2 Surviver type one. Think it was called dead aim. Older ones are way better than 4 and 5 in my opinion.

I love the original longbox version, it's the most difficult RE game ever released IMO. Yes, it's different from both Director Cut versions . See attached:

I've only played both director cut versions. The original Directors cut had multiple endings or something didn't it? Theres a particular one I remember about that one. I Only owned the Green label directors cut which I believe didn't have that particular ending.
I don't really wanna spoil it for you if you haven't finished the original and the director cut versions. Arranged Mode might be best if you go through the original. mixes up the mansion and where the keys are. It would have been really cool it it was random every time, but it follows a set pattern. I know too much about the first one. I played it A LOT.
Might have to try and get my hands on a long box version now. If its truly the most difficult RE game I'll be in love.
Also if you wanna know a secret to change a few costumes and things when you start arranged mode let me know. Pretty simple to remember.
And who needs a gun when you have a combat knife!?

I'm sure that I know just as much as you do about the first game. There are multiple endings for all versions, not just DC. Depending on your game choices, and if you save or kill your supporting characters, that's your ending Longbox version is by far the hardest, wanna know why? Here's why: -Less ammo/save items (some items only appear on Jill or Chris' scenario, where as in the DC they made the ammo appear in both) -Enemies do more damage and take more damage to kill (Yes, even the bosses...YIKES!) -No auto-aim whatsoever (sorry pal, you're SOL if you relied on it in Director's Cut. =P) As always, Chris is still the "hard" scenario character while Jill is the "normal". Chris has to deal with more enemies and less slots (I know you know haha). There is an upside to Chris though...he tends to be better with the weapons and seems to pop off shots quicker, and he's also stronger than Jill as far as being hurt goes. There's always an upside.

You forgot to mention arranged mode for greatest hits. It was a good addition.
Where did you get your long box? I really want that case. (And the original game of course.)
