Let's talk about the Sonic Riders series.
Sonic Riders is a series of racing games for the Sonic The Hedgehog series. In it you ride on Extreme Gear, do tricks and collect rings to improve your performance. Characters were separated into three different types, a system carried over from Sonic Heroes. Speed types can grind on rails and generally are the fastest. Flight types can fly through Dash Rings and generally have superior cornering. Power types are able to muscle their way though obstacles in the courses like cars, rocks and crates and generally have the best off-roading capabilities. In addition to that, each game has a main gimmick that it's built around.
Sonic Riders-The Air System. The boards are fueled by Air, and doing things like boosting, taking sharp corners and dropping tornadoes ate away at your fuel very quickly. If you ran out, you had to run(slowly) on foot or you were knocked out the race entirely. To play this game effectively, you had to maintain and manage your air supply by collecting Air Point Item Capsules, doing tricks to regain Air Points, Attacking fellow racers to regain Air Points, using your character's type skills to regain air or stopping at the Air Pits located around the track.
Sonic Riders: Zero Gravity-The Gravity System. Everybody in the race is given an Arc Of The Cosmos, which is able to manipulate gravity. Gravity Control is used to make sharp corners, Boost yourself onto alternate routes, ride walls and sometimes save yourself from a nasty fall. In addition to that, you can use the Gravity Dive, a move in which you "Fall" forwards, propelling you down the track with incredible speed. To do all this, you need Gravity Points. You gain Gravity Points pretty much the same you you gained air in the first game, minus the pit stops.
Sonic FreeRiders-Kinekt Power. Sonic Freeriders reuses the air system from the first game and all that comes with it, minus running on foot(But your performance does suffer to the point that it's like being on foot.). But it's not the main gimmick. The main gimmick is the fact that you do everything with your body. In addition to normal things, you can have your character hold out their arms to grab rings and items just out of reach, swing off poles, grab on to transportation objects and more. In addition to that, most gears have Gear Parts, carried over from Zero Gravity, you can switch between two different parts by switching between regular and goofy stances.
Sonic Riders as a whole is a very interesting series as far as reception goes. With every installment, people are split down the middle over whether it's an enjoyable and interesting game or an unplayable mess. Part of the complaints stem from the rather harsh learning curve and the fact that you can't exactly pick it up and expect to dominate it. Another common complaint is about the voice acting, as it was one of the first games to use the 4-Kids voice actors after the original cast from Sonic Adventure to Sonic Heroes was fired, and it shows.
I actually GREATLY enjoy the entire series. Mostly because I love the idea of Sonic styled racing, Sonic styled snowboarding and Sonic styled extreme sports in general. I also love the soundtracks for each game. What's you guys opinion on it?
