I figured I'd make a thread about simulation games and see if anyone else here plays them. By simulation, I mean TRUE simulation. No, Ace combat is NOT a simulation, I don't care how it is advertised. Same with need for speed, grid 2 and a whole mess of miss labeled racing games.
I love aircraft so here are two of my favorite flight sims.
For jets we have:
Lock On Modern Combat:
This is my favorite jet simulator. This game is hard as hell and takes time to learn, but the game itself is amazing. The planes that are simulated in this game are Su-27, Su-23,Su-25, MiG-29,F-15c, A-10a. I love the Su-27, sure it's Russian but it's a beautiful plane.
Now the interesting thing is Lock On is based on something called DCS World, which is a free simulator with multiple roles to be played such as ground forces, heli's and airplanes and depending on which games you own from the company adds those vehicles to DCS for you to play as. Me though, I'm not a good enough pilot for that. I really need a flight stick.
The damage model is good. Not as in depth as IL-2, but good none the less.
Second on my list is:
IL-2 Sturmovik 1946
This is THE WWII flight sim. Over 100 aircraft and campaigns from all sides. If it was in world war 2. It was in this game.
This has the best damage model I've ever seen in a flight sim. Bullet holes, individual part damage, such as rudders, ailerons, flaps, wings, etc. One of the few you could also fire into the cockpit and kill the pilot and any crew men on board.
Notice a trend yet? Best two flight sims I've ever played are from Russia.
Third is:
Microsoft Combat Flight Simulator
I don't have much to say because I haven't played it much due to keyboard controls being horrible, but from what I've played it is interesting. IL-2 is more realistic and superior product in the terms of damage model and physics but this game does hold one unique charm, The fact the front line changes in the campaign depending on the players actions.
