LOS ANGELES—At a press event held last night after the E3 floor closed, Sony Ericsson made a surprise announcement about the Xperia Play, its new gaming smartphone.
In addition to many Android-based games aimed at the system, three new PlayStation classics will get Xperia Play ports. "Jet Moto," "Hot Shots Golf 2," and "Wipeout" will all arrive on the Xperia Play later this year, optimized for the slide-out gamepad. Release dates and pricing for the games were not announced.
The three games are well-known PlayStation titles, and while they're not AAA games like "Metal Gear Solid," "Final Fantasy 7," or "Xenogears," they're big enough to give the previously perceived "PlayStation Phone" a strong shot of PlayStation flavor.
Besides the PlayStation games, the Xperia Play will see timed exclusive releases of other games. "Minecraft Pocket," the portable version of PC hit Minecraft, will be available solely on the Xperia Play before its general Android release. In total, Sony Ericsson boasted over 100 games available or coming designed with the Xperia Play in mind.
While the Xperia Play lacks the power of the PlayStation Vita by far, its Qualcomm Snapdragon processor is enough to produce 3D graphics at least equivalent to the Sony PlayStation. Considering smartphone gaming is best known for Angry Birds at this point, 3D graphics and a true gamepad can go a long way, and classic PlayStaiton titles can help keep the handheld in hardcore gamers' minds.
Also this week, Sony Ericsson announced an Experience Pack for the Xperia Play, which includes the DK300 Multimedia Dock, a pocket USB cable, a music cable to connect the dock to your audio system, and the option to download three free games from Gameloft. More details are available on the company's blog.
