Hey! I thought I would contribute a bit about my videogame outings too since everyone else is.
This time, I'm reviewing an old favorite of mine that I recently got off E-Bay, The Playstation racing game Bravo Air Race!
Bravo Air Race, interestingly enough, is an arcade style racing game wherein you fly planes. Each plane has different acceleration, top speed and maneuverability. In addition to that, they also have different wingspans and designs that play a lot into their usability. You can fly through several different stages in an attempt to get the top spot while keeping ahead of the clock.
Graphics: For it's time(1997) I would say that this game is pretty nice looking. It has graphics on par with Tomb Raider 2 almost and it has a decent draw distance. The planes are also very detailed and nice looking.
Gameplay: Being in the arcade style, this game is FAST and FURIOUS! This game is all about balance and control, as you can't exactly put on the handbrakes on a plane. You have to either be able to keep up with the terrain at top speed or balance a speed you can handle with trying to get ahead. Each plane flies differently and can and can't do entirely different maneuvers and tricks based on it's size, shape and performance. While it's easy to find that "Goldilocks Plane" that's just right, it's even easier to find specific planes for specific tracks.
Sound: I'm going to split this in two.
-Music: The music is typical of it's era. Redbook Audio style music tracks featuring lots of Techno, House and Jungle Jazz to be had. While some find this annoying, I actually love this type of music. The music in this game is particularly good(Seeing as it came partially from Metro, the people behind the Bust-A-Move/Groove series, this is no big surprise) and most of the tracks loop at least two or three time before they end, ensuring that you can go as fast or slow as you want to without the music fading out just as you make that dramatic dash to the finish line(Something that personally I find annoying). All the tracks perfectly compliment their respective race courses and are all fast, hectic and, at the same time, just as graceful as you would imagine flying a plane would be. As it is Redbook Audio, it's playable in CD players and even rippable with DVD burners.
-Sound Effects: There are multiple plane sounds to suit the different planes, there's scrapes and smashes and smacks, and there's people to yell at you. Everyone with a speaking role in the game uses the same voice, though, so it's kinda annoying to pass by apperently the same person twelve times...
Replay Value: And HEEEERE'S where the game falls apart. The game comes stocked with about 20 planes and 5 tracks at start up. After you clear those five stages in first place, you can clear whatever track you want in first to see an engrish "You Are Winner" style text ending with a CGI clip of your chose plane flying around and that's it. There are two extra planes to unlock, but one is rubbish and the other is overpowered to the point of uncontrollably. That's it.
Final Thought: This is a FUN game, it's a GREAT sounding game, it's a PRETTY looking game, but most of all, it's a SHORT game. The only way to play this game is in short bites, otherwise your going to bore yourself of it very quickly.
So there you go. I ripped the music for my own listening pleasure so if you want the music, then just message me for it.
