I've had a sweet tooth for a game with twisted metal and car wreaking carnage that felt something like old Destruction derby or better. So I set off.
First game I came across was Demolition Derby & Figure 8 Race
Now Demolition Derby & Figure 8 Race is a good game. Solid car physics and fun to play. A few problems with the game though, is the cars are one big piece and deform as such. So no open hoods or trunks. Cars sometimes "Phase" Into one another when enough speed is obtained,
As for graphics the game is some what reminiscent of carmageddon 2, just worse in my opinion.
Now with that said the game IS fun, but doesn't warrant the 20 dollar price tag.
There is somewhat of a following for this game if you can find them. I've only found 1 site.
Demolition champions/Smash up derby (EU)
Most recent game I played. It is fun and has solid physics, but the cars feel kind of light. This game also offers many types of arenas such as bowls, tracks and figure eights and has a good choice of cars.
I liked this game and might buy it. You can find it fairly cheap. 2-4 dollars.
(Since I can't find a gameplay video heres a nice screenshot.)
FlatOut
Now heres a game I played a few years back and loved it. Theres two things you need when playing this game.
1. A sense of humor.
2.A imagination
The game is focused on demoliton derby racing with a few funny mini games.
I don't remember a lot of in depth details so heres a video!
FlatOut has a lot of community sites so there are plenty of mods and other content for the game.
There are also sequals of the series. I didn't add them to the list because they didn't stick with the demolition derby feel and started adding street cars and other vehicles. Giving it more of a burnout feel.
My PC sadly cant run it, so I'll have to settle for the PS2 version of FlatOut.
Destruction Derby (Dos/Ps1)
Destruction Derby has always been one of my favorites. From the Developers of Driver this smash'em up has good driving physics and is very addictive and cheap! Damage modeling was good for it's time as well. Not as fun as the squeal though.
Destruction Derby 2 (Ps1/PC)
Destruction Derby 2 one upped a already great game. Adding more track options and better damage modeling with the chance of loosing your wheels. Right now this game stands as my favorite demolition derby game. The game uses the same engine as Driver one (I believe) Thus you might have a few times where you get thrown into the air by your opponents.
A few games can be argued to fit in this category, such as Carmageddon, Twisted Metal, Etc. This is based solely on Demolition derby. Where the cars are the weapons and there are no power ups.
Heres a few Mods for other games I decided to add.
Carmageddon 2 to Destruction Derby
Removes all the civiy killing and power ups. Turns it into a true Destruction Derby. I like this idea because I love Carmageddons car deformation. It's very advanced for it's time. The Mod is complete and I'll need to try this when I get Carmageddon 2 again!
Banger!
Theres also a mod called Seduction of destruction: Banger for Carmageddon 2. Focuses on more traditional Derbies. I've played this one and loved it. Good old carma with a derby twist. No civy killing so it's safe for all ages! And no power ups.
Apparently Banger is a actual EU demolition derby. Heres the Site
Theres also amod for NASCAR heat for Banger, but I haven't played it or NASCAR heat.
Test Drive: Eve of Destruction/Driven to destruction (EU) (Xbox/PS 2)
I've seen and heard great things about it. I need to pick it up and play it sometime. Physics look good. The damage is decent and I like the idea of the "Menu" per-say.
Have any of you played it?
Demolition Racer
Enough said.
