Today, i finally beat Spawn : The Eternal.....considered one of the worst PS1 games of all time. I've been trying to beat this game since I was 10 years old...but never could. ;)Filled with terrible platforming, beyond broken controls, and more glitches than you can count...it took me 4 hours of cussing to finally claim this beast in my "beaten" pile. The game would not have been so bad if it were given it's full potential, it could have been an amazing adventure platforming puzzle fighting title (yeesh), but what we got instead was a big pile of steaming shit with Spawn and friends in it.
Spawn is one of the only games I have to use codes to complete, and trust me...this game is literally impossible to complete without the use of codes, the programming is THAT bad, and until you've played it yourself...don't wrong me for it. I swear theres a spiked wall trap on the "Sphere 6" level you can't pass without invulnerability. On top of that...Spawn is a HUGE character and controls like a damn tank, and the traps are large too...so it's almost impossible to get around these things without getting completely canned.
One thing I did like about this game is the fighting style. You had a main health bar, and when you encounter an enemy it goes to a Mortal Kombat/Tekken style with both opponents with health bars and your buttons now become all different attacks. Left and right punches and left and right kicks, as well as some special button combo moves like cape/chain whips and power punches and kicks. My personal favorite is the "Arm Rip" move, and it's exactly what it sounds like it is. You literally grab the opponent by the throat, rip their arm right off their body (blood everywhere), and can then beat them to death with it (the arm and opponent STILL spraying blood all over) while they bleed out...BAD-F'in-ASS! Honestly, that is the single coolest element of this game...It's SO violent. To hear that sinew rip from bone when the limb comes off, its just so satisfying and no other game I can recall was that violent back in 1997...think about it...when was the last time you could beat someone to death with their own arm that you just ripped off their body as they bleed to death struggling to fight back? Never before and never since, that's when! ;D
Although the gameplay is next to completely horrid....the soundtrack is fantastic. Whoever did this soundtrack deserves a medal, it's that good. When you engage an enemy in a fight...the metal kicks in, and DAMN it's perfect brawling music. There's just nothing like hearing crazy heavy guitar leads while ripping an enemies arm off, haha! Check this out and tell me it's not killer.
In conclusion....Spawn is a rare breed. It combines action and adventure with puzzle, platforming, and arcade fighting...not many games have done that. This game is definitely worth checking out and playing for yourself....if not just to only rip a few arms off and pop the disc into a CD player. I highly recommend this as something that "is so bad it rules".
A must-play before you kick the bucket,
