The trick is to swap the disc when it's booting up. I do it with my PS1. I think what happens is that it reads some security thing on the first disc and then loads the game from the bootleg disc. But you need to have the disc spinning. I put a piece of tape in the hole that the cover presses down. The only problem is that you risk damaging the spinning mechanism thingy (i forget whats the technical term for it, it's cold here gimme a break). There are tutorials on youtube for the PS1. Also doesn't matter if it's the PS1 or the PSOne (the smaller PS1 they sold later).
As for the PS2 it's more tricky since you have to open it up like Enigma is talking about. This all of course with out one of those swap devices.
God I hope this post made sense. COLD. >.<

COLD. >.< Yeah, and I had a friend who had a swap disc that works on PS2 and PS1, it was a real Playstation disc, it was black and needed no swap trick to boot on, once you got on the disc, it will stop spinning and it will say to open the door and swap this disc for a PS1 game. Once you've inserted the PS1 game, you just had to close the door and press x. The game would play. Also, for the PS1 (big grey or little white), you have to tape the little plastic thingy like CaMacKid said, and on the PS2 slim, you have to tape the plastic thingy plus some little things inside it that prevent the game from being read if open etc.... On the PS2 fat however, it's way more easier than the PS2 slim, you just have to unscrew the top cover and remove a magnetic white thing (it stabilizes the cd) and there you have two choices, let a normal PS1 game boot to the Playstation logo and swap there (without opening the door tray), or booting up with no cd inside, go to the browser, insert a real PS1 cd and put the white thing on it, double tap the "open disc tray button", let it run until there's a black cd icon, swap the original cd for a copied one, select the black cd icon and play the game! There's several other methods that requires special parts or mod chips, but these ones are the free ones. The game is A LOT less glitchy on a real console, there's no texture glitching/disappearing at all. The 2 player mode is laggy though.

You actually have to do the same thing with tomb raider on ps3. You have to boot up tomb raider 2 until the ps logo pops up and swap the disc by ejection it and putting in tomb raider. Its a odd glitch they never fixed.

Thank you guys for the info but it seems too much of a risk to damaging my ps2 slim- i got rid of my ps1 a long time ago but i'll get one eventually, the idea that attracted me the most was the actual disc for swapping
ah and yes so that's why tomb raider didn't work on the ps3 i was going crazy that i bought 2 tomb raider 1 copies haha which prompted me to ditch the ps3 and plug in back my ps2 a few years ago

You probably have the slim one so PS1 games won't work. And haha, yeah, I broke a white edition slim PS2 using taping the wrong thing, I taped it in place again after hours of hard tries (it was 0,5mm X 1mm LOL) but it ended up broken after all. I can say that the PS2 slim is way less long living (I broke 2 out of 2 LOL) and that the only thing that can broke the fat one is dust in the DVD reader's eye, just clean it and it's like new.

I think its more along the lines that its hard to run software developed for a completely different chip set. If It was about that Why would you buy a ps3 if your just going to play ps1/2 titles?
Emulation of PS2 stopped because oh how difficult and expensive it was.
PS3 emu would probably be 10x as hard with that mess of a system. (In terms of programming)

(In terms of programming) Yeah, and even if someone managed to create an emulator, a normal or gaming pc would probably not be able to play it, it would require a machine with insane specs, it would be impossible to emulate.

WAIT! They are in the textures files! I haven't noticed, they're just variations of the regular character! Actually, if you start a race, for example Atlantis II, you will see right at the start a variation of dancer and a vaiation of brainiac! WAIT!!! IT'S NOT A VARIATION OF DANCER, IT HAS THE KAWASAKI LOGO ON IT!
